Dear Meg,
I am new in this forum and recently saw your posts.Congratulations !You said that you started preperation for USMLE step 1 since sep. 2003,and with in 6 months you got this result ? I am just starting prep for step 1 and really need your honest reply in this regard.Which year you got your graduation degree? How many hours you worked ( if working?) in a day during your study period? And one more thing........didn't you read Kaplan's pathology notes or listen web prep at all?....only Goljan? When you think you will be able to give step 2 ? You really got this amazing score and all credit goes to you without any doubdt.Congratulations and best wishes for your future. Please reply soon.
Thanks.

Hi rjay,
thanks for your congratulations. I graduated in 2001. On an average I worked about 8-10 hours, sometimes more, sometimes lesser. I listened to webprep ( I am sorry I forgot to mention on the list of materials I used)- I listened some of them about twice, esp biochem genetics. and I did Kaplan patho, goljan and BRS patho 2 times. I am hoping to give step 2 in 4-5 months.

dont worry, just keep working, being focussed. I had 2 classes and a research assistantship along with my preparation. I kept adjusting my schedule according to the time I had.

what I felt towards the end is that though step 1 seems vast, once you do 2-3 revisions, you can narrow it down. One can guess what kind of questions are possible.... in a sense what concepts are they trying to target! You dont have to know everything in the world.

On the valuemd.com , there are a set of High Yield concepts by Tommy, those, in my opinion, reflect the important ones really well.

all the best,
Meg

Thank You so much for the quick reply. You really raised my hopes.I am also more or less in your situation ,needed that score too ? but, not sure ...everything is so confusing. So, many books,so many prep courses and so many people telling different things ? But, I found you a genuine person ! My prayers are with you.
Thank You.

Hi sincap,
that is a difficult question grin . Each book had something more than the other here and there.... but to be safe, I would say use Kaplan notes + Goljan audio. BRS is great for understanding and the book is interesting to read but Kaplan has little more relevant to boards info(just my personal opinion) like in the neoplasia chapter Kaplan has a list of oncogenes, their products etc... I am not that sure if BRS had it all. But BRS is certainly easier and intersting to read than Kaplan.
Doing FA (esp the pictures) is good too.
All the best,
Meg
