Hey I have now gotten 3 LORs which I know will be strong. Now I just got a 4th LOR from the head of my IM department. The problem is that its very short (2 small paragraphs) and it has spelling mistakes. Now I know that PD just ask for 3 LORS, but my reason for asking this is that I noticed some programs like to for you to have an LOR from the head of your IM dep. Then should I add it in even if its very weak? Would adding this actually hurt my application?

i dont think u should submit a letter with spelling mistakes. length is not that big an issue as long as the letter is well written..in terms of content..its good to submit one from the head of IM but i dont think its an absolute requirement. can u arrange another one from ur head...just one without spelling mistakes .

Don't submit it. If you are an IMG which I suppose you are the IM head is not necessary you just need US doctors letters. If its as bad as it sounds it will not help you but hurt your application and remember that you want you application to look as good as possible. Most programs just ask for 3 letters and one more is just optional. If you already have 3 strong letters DON'T add the one that's bad.

biggy.. yes.. they are many many programs, especially university progs which cite a letter from the chair of medicine as a must in addition to 2 more lors......but donno whether they strictly enforce it and euse it to weed out applications... good luck
