Carbamazepine MOA: blocks post-tetanic potentiation (decreases synaptic responses). Indic: It's used for all types of seizures, except Petit Mal(Valpro, Ethosuximide), Status Epilepticus (diazepam), and Myoclonic Seizures (Valpro) S.E.: Aplastic Anemia, Agranulocytosis; must check liver enzymes; diplopia, ataxia. It increases p450. The way I remember it is that, drugs that increase p450 are: A-Alcohol B-Benzos C-Barbs P-Phenytoin Q-Quinidine R-Rifampin

1. Give the mechanism of action -reduces propagation of abnormal impulses in the brain by blocking Na+ channels --> inhibiting repetitive action potentials in epilepsy 2. Therapeutic uses? - partial (simple or complex) seizures, tonic-clonic seizures, and used to treat tigeminal neuralgia 3. Does it induce or inhibit P-450? -induces the enzyme, therefore, increases metabolism of other antiepileptic drugs 4. What are the blood side effects? - aplastic anemia, agranulocytosis, and thrombocytopenia 5. What are the other side effects? -hepatotoxicity, stupor, coma, respiratory depression, drowsiness, vertigo, ataxia, blurred vision, and minor GI irration symptoms like N/V.
