What does the Progesterone Challenge test prove? does it prove 'ovulation status' or does it prove 'endogenous estrogen production'? UW says it proves 'endogenous estrogen production', but Kaplan says it can show 'anovulation'? This is from one of the UW q's I had trouble with. Thanks

Endogenous estrogen prod by def means anovulation... the ovary is stimulated by FSH, so it starts to: 1. maturate an ovum.. 2. Secrete estrogen, for the uterus lining to grow, bl vs to hepertophy & elongate.. at the point of mat, there is the LH surge & only after ovulat will the ovary start secreting progest, from the corpus leut.. So when the ovary fails to release the ovum, estrogen will continue & progest will not be secreted, leading to extra growth of the endomet, reaching a point where it can't hold itself any longer ( insufficient bl supp), & shedding will start----> late prolonged, heavy mensus.. so anovulation = endogenous est prod = no progest.. giving ext progest blocks the prod of FSH & so no more stim to the ovary to secrete est---> bleeding.. always suspect LH : FSH 2:1 as PCOD untill proven otherwise ( as LH will go really high trying to enhance ovulation, the problem is that the ovarian memb is thick)
