can anyone tell me how to diff grief response from major depressive d/o in a patient who had lost family member recently. Thanks

Less than one year: normal grief
More than one year: depression

Grief: symptoms come and go
returns to baseline within a couple months
Treatment: supportive, meds don't help but therapy can.

Depression:
pervasive and unremitting
MAY threaten SUICIDE
Do NOT return to baseline
Treatment: Antidepressants.

Grief is normal. Depression is pathological.
