a 55 yr old man has 1-cm nodule in prostate and has complaints of urinary infrequesncy. A PSA test is ordered. Conventionally a PSA greater than 4 ng/mL is considered abnormal. Using this standard, this test has a 80% sensitivity and 90% specificity. a recently published article found on a cross sectional study, 10% of men of his age has prostate cancer. his PSA result is 7ng/mL. what is ur best estimate of the likelihood that this man has prostate cancer

a.13%
b.25%
c.36%
d.47%
e.58%
f.69%
g.72%

He is testing positive. The test has a 80% sensitivity so he has 80% chance to truly have prostate cancer.

I think they r asking for positive predictive value

  #5

ANS-d.47%

  #6

Sensitivity 80%means out of 10%prevalant population -->
8 would test TRUE POSITVE and 2 would test FALSE NEGATIVE.

Specificity 90% means out of 90cancer free[100total-10prevalance=90cancer free]-->
81 would test TRUE NEGATIVE and 9 would test FALSE POSITIVE.

So we have

PPV=TP/TP+FP
PPV=8/8+9=8/17=0.47

that would be 47%
