"A close relative who cares for the person (e.g., the daughter) is most likely to have abused this elderly demented woman. Although no excuse for abuse, this may be due in part to the stresses associated with caring for a demented elderly person. Unrelated people such as caretakers (even if alcoholic or unemployed) are much less likely than a close relative to abuse an elderly person."
