I am new on this forum, I am still a student. I see you guys discussing everything about usmle from applying to step1 till residency and matching and that's very helpful, but my problem is way before that, my problem is making the decision of taking usmle, it's not an easy one, as for me I really wanna take it but it's not only my will that I need to have, when I come to reality I find myself facing two obstacles:
first, the costs I heard they're about 10,000 dollars
second, I am Egyptian and I wonder about the chances of an arab doc in us
does any one see these obstacles surmountable. Plz I really anyone's advice. This advice can change my future nod

I think there are much more obtacles in Egypt! Concerning the 10,000$ dont worry hopefully you would earn them back in no time (which you wont in Egypt). If your parents are willing to send you and you have good faith then go for it.

Pls, what year are you in?

The process all together is expensive but hopfully it would all pay of very well. Forget the money issue. Lets talk about eduacation. You wont find such education any were in the arab world precisely in Egypt. So, let your aim be : looking for the best education and clinical practice.

u have u go 4 it, just use the right resources, follow a good prep strategy, decide when u r ready & go 4 it

the question is not wether u shout take it or not, but when 2 take it (i am IMS & didnt decide yet but i am studying iam not lossing anything), what material 2 use & how 2 prep is the function of this forum browse it & u will find plenty of experiences

Why would it cost $10000 shocked
Step 1, 2CK, 2CS = approx $3000

Apart from Books for prep, I know there will be other admin expenses when we apply for residencies - can someone give a close estimate of how much would it cost for that????

Anyways, money should never be a source of discouragement, young_doc. You can always get loans, and so the only thing you need to focus, yes FOCUS, on is study STUDY STUDY!!!!!!!

thanx yoga and praying4a99. I finished my second year. for the best education and clinical practice, these are the main motivation for me, without them i'd have never thought about it, but i can't keep my concerns out of my mind, i mean they are also facts

  #12

I never said that i was an Arab raised eyebrow ... i may be, but no i ddnt say i was! Buddy, sure there are going to be some obstacles in your way but what about the obstacles were you live in Egypt. Dude it has so bad reputation. Im not making this up. I heared that and i read it in other forums. I dont want to give many examples but please if you have any friends doing their internships (the year after you finish your clinical courses) ask them how they are treated! If what i heared is correct, they are treated like #$%&! How much are Doctors payed in Egypt after graduation? now that is a big JOOOKE! Where do you want to work in Egypt? How many good hospitals are there in Egypt anyway?

So, if you put all the +evs and -evs of each country in front of you i think the picture would become clearer for you.

Sure there are other things you should worry about such as: your faith and believes, living far away, being treated a little different than the native Americans ... but in the end ... where would you benefit more? ... if you are worried on your faith, then you should work on making it stronger regardless of where you practice your job.

if you want click on my name and take my email.

take care ...

This is a life decision we are talking about here! Dont forget to study all the circumstances with your parents and the people whom you trust. I hope youll be guided to whats best for you, cuz whats good for some one itsnt good for the other.

praying4a99, as u said it's about +ves & -ves, i think by any means the +ves are more. as for my parents they seem supportive, it's all about me and i think working here in Egypt can't be an alternetive. what do u think?

  #21

Buddy i said what i have but that is not enough. You cant make your decision off a forum on the net. Think of it throughly. I believe you are on vacation now. So look in the issue a little deeper. There are other things to put in the big picture as temptation, raising children and political things that might happen at any time.

This is enough for tonight, log on after some time and let us know what else you thought of.

I do not want to encourage you or discourage you , but I am just going to say the facts I know .

Long ago I met one IMG from Egypt, he worked at USA as ECG tech , he said money is good, but cannot studty. Then he went to Canada to attend kaplan course FT to study in short 3 or more mo to get usa med exm done . I lost track of him, but am sure he is now practice, cause he start the tuition , eam v. early , by time he just need to pass or 80 something mark. Not like 99 in recent trend .

Then I met another IMG from Eyypt , she is alone study at kap FT, also work PT non medical ?? restaurant [ waiter got alot of tips if service is good, just to carry food from kitchen to customer table, not other involve ] or casher , may be under the table . Very determinant, am sure she will success too . She lives at renter house to save money with girl room mate , since real apartment are v. expensive .

They both look happy, looking forward to be a DR in USA .

There are so many IMG here all from all around the world try to study for exm & work too, to get MD here .

Just to tell you how ppl have to work hard when in western world .
10,000$ could be, adding those kap tuition fees, so can come to usa or canada to attend kaplan with student visa . Just my 2 cents, I did not ask others personal , but as they said they came as student visa .
I see some come as visitor, work under the table, attend kaplan 1st cause to change to student visa , some time takes long .
If you look positive, be yourself, abit fit in while in puclic , you'll get respect, treat well, but even in your own country , I am sure there are all sort of class with money level , back ground, education, power etc, & ethenic group . It is every where, but beauty of western here is , nosuch a bit fussy about you work as blue worker or white worker generally, still some still has that dinosure mind . By law, no one can discriminate anyone for any thing .

Any way, made decision by self & family , get the best for all . I just can tell what is going on here . As life , some success, some don't, some did not pursue or become MD here due to so many factors, but still success , or some not .
So if you like to be MD here, try your best, outcome is life & luck , then be prepare to be ok with that & do your best at any situation & never give up the life as MD or not .

GL nod
