An experiment is conducted in which proliferating cells are subjected to ionizing radiation. The ionizing radiation leads to arrest in a checkpoint that monitors completion of DNA replication. It is observed that there are increased numbers of chromosomal abnormalities in these cells. Which of the following is the checkpoint affected by the ionizing radiation?

A G0/G1

B G1/S

C S/G2

D G2/M

E M/G0

i think its C... coz once cell enters into G2 phase there is no mechanism to repair the damage

(D) CORRECT. This is the second checkpoint in the cell cycle; ionizing radiation activates this checkpoint, resulting in chromosomal abnormalities in mitosis.

(A) Incorrect. This represents entry into the cell cycle from the resting, non-proliferating state. Connective tissue cells and hepatocytes can be stimulated to enter the cell cycle, but others such as neurons are terminally differentiated and cannot.
(B) Incorrect. This is the cell cycle checkpoint at which defects in DNA are detected to prevent replication with mutations or chromosomal breaks. .
(C) Incorrect. This is the synthesis phase in which there is no checkpoint.
(E) Incorrect. This is the point at which a cell goes back to a resting state.
