hi this is my dilemma, I am doing hisory, physical exam, some counseling with patients at a Family Practice Clinic at a Hospital. The family doctor allowed me to have a lot of patient contact in his clinic except that I DON'T have insurance because the doctor never asked for it or required it. Anyway, the doctor was always there to supervise and everything is with his permission and supervision. Is what I am doing be called an externship or observership???? I am actually given a lot of patient contact in fact I get to interview all his patients and do physical exam and counseling also...pls. help Now, I asked for a letter of recommendation and he said I just write it and he will just sign. I don't know what to write now if this is an observership or externship. Pls. help

It sound like an externship because you did have patient contact, and with observerships you don't , so be sure to put that in the LOR, put everything that you mention you did. Is great that you are given the opportunity to write it, make sure you also put that you practiced evidence based medicine and that you were comfortable in the US healthcare system. Good luck

Hi: I have read somewhere on this forum that "PD/Interviewers donot take it in a positive way if you had a direct patient contact without insurance", I have done exactly same practice under supervision of a FP, even did papsmear and I was not insured but he allowed me to do it, I dont know whether I should mention it or not? Please help me about this and if externship can be done postgraduation? Thanks!
