Hi guys--In Medullary carcinoma what happens to the calcium levels?

I thought It is INCREASED CALCITONIN and hence decreased resorption of calcium and hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia--UW says it is HYPERCALCEMIA. I know I am missing somewhere--Can anybody figure it out for me..

Thanx!

I made the same mistakesmiling face, as far as I understand, medullary CA which happens in the context of MEN II, is accompanied by pheo and parathyroid hyperplasia (or adenoma), and basicaaly the amount of overproduction of parathyroid hormone is more than that of calcitonin from medullary CA, therefore you'll see hypercalcemia.

In MEN IIa Calcium concentration goes up.....

but is there any change in MEN IIb?

In MEN 11b there is no hyperparathyroidism so no hypercalcemia.

MEN 1=pituitary tumors+pancreatic tumors + parathyroid hyperplasia

MEN 11a= Medullary carcinoma of thyroid+ Pheochromcytoma+ Hyperparathyroidism

MEN 11b= -----------------same------------------------------- + Neuromas
