Hi
I am IMG who graduated in 1999. I have first step score of 93.
I am doing step 2 by sept 2nd week.
I also am US citizen.
I did PhD from 2000 to 2005 in highly ranked university in USA. I am a junior faculty now at the same university. I have 3 publications and 2 more are getting reviewed. I have observership experience of 8 months ...The attending overseeing me allowed me to actually do everything (outpatient history taking, examination and case presentation) and I am sure that she will detail that in her LoR.

Two things that I have to overcome to match in respectable university based IM program are
1. I dont have all scores on Sep 1. ( I cant do much there...I need time to study and I dont want to score low)

2. I have heard that programs screen for year of graduation and usually exclude people who have graduated in excess of 5 years earlier than match year. American medical students who go into MD PhD program dont have problem because their year of graduation is considered at the end of their program. Since I did MD and PhD in separate part, I am not sure how to reflect that in the ERAS application. May be SOP or something.

I will like to get opinion of BBB or some others who have idea about how this works....

Thanks again....

I am in a similar position except I graduated in 1998, had 2 years of residency and 2 years of clinical appointment, and have 27 publications and 12 presentations at US/international conferences...
I had a chance to speak to several PC over a phone, and hey recommend to emphasize on the years you spent doing research, especially if the research happened to be clinically relevant... And some of them said that this will be very helpful...

Ouch, forgotten to add, that most of PC do not recommend to submit your application until you have your scores... We are not US graduates, and that is the difference... It is OK to submit when you have the scores but do not have the ECFMG certificate yet; you will just need to send e-mail to PC and say that you in general complied with the rule and passed all steps, and the release of the certificate is pending, and ECFMG will update them/send them the certificate as soon as it it released...
I personally doubt that it's any helpful to sent the appln out on Sept 1. The only benefit is that you will get a more flexible list of dates of interview, and that is it... Remember, most of US graduates do not have their MSPE before Nov 1, and that is why the application deadline in many programs is even after Nov 15... Before that date the PCs get rig off the least compliant applications such as those who come from IMGs without all steps taken/passed...

Thanks justice...
I am worried about my application never getting to the evaluators because computerised program only downloads application that specifically comply with the parameters selected including year of graduation.

I am not sure how can we emphasize research- even clinical research except in our CV and SOP.

As I see it, my best chance is with my LOR writers calling the programs and getting my application on the desk of evaluators.

thanks for info and good luck. I will consider your advice on having all scores. But to tell the truth, I dont want to loose year's worth of time any more. I am ready to go community program now if it comes down to that.

Hi sachida, I was also considering applying for this year's match but with only step 1 score, and in the last week of september, I wasn't sure that that was a good idea, because everyone recommend to do it earlier and with at list 2 grades and perferably with ECFMG certificate, but you are the second person here at the forum who is planning on submitting with only step 1, or are you going to apply in October with step 1 and 2???...Have you done cs?...what was your Phd about??

I read in one of bbb's post that that their cut off was 5 years but that they screened for upto 7 years to allow people who have done a residency in their country, correct me if I am wrong bbb please.

So I think that if you are a good candidate and have a strong application, and good lors, maybe that gap won't be as bad. Good luck to you!

I will go for Sept 1st with scores I have. I intend to catch community programs by doing so. For university based program, I will try to get my LoR writer physicians to call for me. And that will be after I have got all scores. My plan is to do step 2 CK around sept15th. Step 2CS in following 2 weeks.

This is what my program does - I have no knowledge about other programs.
