Hi friends--Can anyone explain me aout the cutaneous manifestations of SLE?

I am always getting this one wrong--In UW there was a question which state the patient has raynaud's disease and round scaly elevated skin lesions with central necrosis on forearm and chest and erythematous cheeks---Answer is SLE!!

I was of the notion that only amlar and discoid rash are the cutaneous manifestations--Can anyone explain important feature to remember!
Thanx!

Accrding to my knowledge the most common cutaneous lesions in SLE are:

-Malar rash, which I am sure you know,

-Photosensitivity, which means having a rash after exposing to an amount of UV light that wouldn't do anything to a normal person

-Frequent oral aphtous ulcers

- Discoid lupus, that are those discoid lesions you described. They are circular lesions most commonly appearing on the head and face with central atrophy and inlfamed elevtaed borders

The following are cutaneuos manifestation that are not included in the diagnostic criteria as those I mentioned priviusly but that still are quite frequent in lupus patients

-Subacute cutaneous lupus, erythematous, warm, plaques in light exposed distribution. These are different from the discoid because if I remember well the discoid lesions progress with central scarring and permanent hair follicle loss

-Leukocytoclastic vasculitis, with palpable purpura and livedo reticularis

- raynaud's

And now I can't remember anything else. But I guess the most confusing thing is differentiating the discoid lupus with the subacute

Thanx a lot virgola! That helped!

So,Raynaud's can occur in SLE also! Ans rashes can also occur in trunks and extremities in SLE@

The question described as round elevated skin lesions with CENTRAL ATROPHY----Is this a description of discoid rash?

Yes, I think it was the discoid lupus
