Kaplan Qbank USMLE

I'm doing UW for the secone time around, and i noticed that UW doesn't take into account that i've done the questions already, and adds my new scores to my cumulative performance.

So if you miss a hard question, but you notice that "73% of users got the answer"...don't be discouraged! I think the "UW-percentage of users that got the answer" also includes those doing the questions the second time around!!

(the same probably goes for the percentile they give you to let you know where stand)

So don't let the UW statistics discourage you (as it did for me my first time doing the questions). G'luck everyone! nod

I just came here to start a new thread about this and found your post... I am so upset everytime I finish a UW session: how can there anytime be such high averages on some qs I find so hard? I mean either I am a complete ignorant (which can be but I prefer thinking it's not the case) or there is something wierd in how they record these statistics. For instance today I did 2 blocks: the first looked impossible to me and I scored as the average (57%), the second looked easier and I did 71 % while the average was 55% which should mean harder than the other.... I am getting crazy with this! I am trying to do so:

< 40% avg qs, I consider them those impossible qs that if you answer is good but if you don't it's normal;

40-70% avg qs, are those we all should aim to get, in order to have a great prep for the exam;

>70% avg qs are those you can't miss and so if got wrong you definitely have to review that concept veeery well (and unfortunately I keep missing some of them....)

Guys I'd like to join u in the painfull exp of UW, i'm doin it for the seond time, 1st time I finished with an av of 59%disapproval, then my scores r much better 70-88% but still every couple of blocks i'm getting a fifty something %, i still miss a few qs that most poeple get, & boy that doesn feel good at all..

I decided to listen to young_doc's advice & i will take NBME, I was planning to take it tom but my friends adviced me to solve Kaplan Simulated exam 1st..

An advice: when solving UW 2nd time, if u find a qs that u just know the ans but u don't know why, solve it like u understand it, don't just put the right ans, as when u will see it wrong ull probably read it better than if u see u got it right..

virgola82,how are ur scores on the 2nd time?

Cirus, i think we're on the same boat.. my first time around i got 59% as well!

Right now, the 2nd time around, i'm getting in the 70-80's. I haven't hit a block where i got in 50's yet confused But i can understand that getting 50's the 2nd time around would be very discouraging

Right now i'm just reviewing FA, reading over my UW notes (from my 1st time), and doing UW for 2nd time.

And about the NBME.. i took the Form 2 the day after i finished UW (about 3 weeks ago), and i got 245 nod So it made me feel A LOT better.. That's why I suggested you take one! G'luck!

Cirus, I haven't finished yet the first time and I think I won't considering that my exam is close... I am doing the last review now and after finishing a topic I redo all the marked qs on that topic in tutor mode. Most of the time i remember them by heart but still it's useful to reinforce concepts. I usually mark a lot of q per block, all those I am not really sure, so I end up marking like half of the qs per block and most of time those I get wrong are only among those marked so redoing the marked qs allows me to do wrong and doubtful qs together. I am really freaking out with this, hope only this pain is gonna be over soon...

By the way go for NBME soon, I am sure you will feel much better after that. I did form 2 too a couple of weeks ago and scored 600 (236) and this made me feel much more confident than

Guys, I know what it feels like! But just to add on what has been discussed....Didnt you find the same thing for Kaplan QBank for Step 1? I think there is something we can draw from these 2.......

Hey young_doc, with an NBME score like yours, you should have no problem in getting this done and dusted with!

I got a 50% or so score average on the UW but next week I did the Kap Q bank( downloaded Version) and got the following scores

82,70,60,86,76,74,84,79,34,72,82,50,80,78.

Yet I found that the q sin the real exam were OK. I have not recd my score yet or not sure whether I will pass. But what I want to say is UW is real weird at times. I mean there is a lot of concept testing as also there is straight forward recall qs which is not what the exams ask.

So dont get unduly worried abt low UW scores.

@hotobhaga
didnt get u.
u mean theres more concept testing or more recall qs in actual exam compared to UW?

  #13

underscore

What i meant is when you read a book it is easier to recall the stuff you have learnt. Whearas if the same stuff is in a question form it is difficult to recall. At least for me. As the questions are never the same in the exam. That is why Secrets is a better book than Mock exam though they are actually the same and by the same author.
