As part of an experimental study, a volunteer agrees to have 10 grams of mannitol injected intravenously. After sufficient time for equilibration, blood is drawn and the concentration of mannitol in the plasma is found to be 65 mg/100 mL. Urinalysis reveals that 10% of the mannitol had been excreted into the urine during this time period. What is the approximate extracellular fluid volume of this volunteer? A. 10 L B. 14 L C. 22 L D. 30 L E. 42 L

answer is 14? ------------ V x C = A ------------ V= Volume of the compartment C= Concentration of tracer A= amount of tracer V x 65mg/100ml= 9gr (90% of initial A) V= 13,8 ==> 14 ?

no need for formula, if 10% is excreted; 9gr mannitol is circulating in blood. mannitol's conc is 65/100ml---) 6,5gr/per liter 6,5gr 1 L 9gr x L ========== 9/6,5 = 14
