Severe combined immunodeficiency syndrome (SCID), a group of immunodeficiencies with major deficiency of both the T cell and B cell functions. Autosomal recessive SCIDs (T-cell receptor deficiency) and X-linked SCIDs (defect in cytokine recognition by B cell receptors) are two forms. Defects in T-cell enzyme production, both adenosine deaminase and purine nucleoside phosphonylase deficiency, is a third form. Children present with failure to thrive, infections including pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, candida and CMV infection, affecting skin, lungs, bones and GI tract.
