I know it estriol,[ from placenta prepared from both fetal adrenal androgens ]is basis for making downs diagnosis, but E also seems right which is responsible for maintaining the pregnancy

yes D is the ans. about estradiol,i think it is mainly secreted by ovary and is resposible until 3 rd month of pregnancy. then afterward its estriol, from placenta. it's been mentioned in k notes that if u remove both ovaries after 3 months of pregnacy , it continues.

fetal adrenal lacks 3 beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase necessary for conversion of DHEA into testosteron, and also production of gluco n mineralo corticoids is hampered. DHEA goes to placenta and gets converted to estriol. correlation: in DCT cells 11 beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase is present which degrades cortisol. chinese people eat LICORICE a tonic, which inhibits this enzyme, so cortisol goes unchecked and it acts on aldosteron receptors. result is hypertention and hypokalemia.
