I have a question about PE for female. If a female patient has chest pain, and we need to check the breathing sound, heart sound, or need to palpate the rib or sternum, can we put stethoscope and exam the bones from the outside the gown? Or we have to untie the gown for any PE? Thanks!

No matter if it's a guy or a girl NEVER do your PE through the gown!!! Always ask permission and untie it...auscultate over the skin never through the bra or the gown...if the bra gets in the way ask permission to move it or if you are a guy ask the patient to move it aside a little bit and explain why you are asking this...if you ever do your PE through the gown or the bra you will be rested points so don't do it no matter what...that's a golden rule!!!! Also don't ever auscultate over a bony area!!! Good luck with your exam!!
