This is what I did for Goljan audio files for Ipod [have already posted the same on P2b's thread]
When you do "add a file" into iTunes, and choose say Goljan "Ch1Cell Injury" file, once it has gone into iTune, select the file, right click and choose "Convert to MP3". I know the original file is already in MP3 format, but it needs to be converted again.
Once it has converted the file to MP3, you can delete the original file that you uploaded and the newly converted file should play. After you "Sync" your Ipod of course
