hi..
i am a newibie of this forum..
i ama medstudnt..cmpleted 4 years of 6, in vacation (a monthlong left)...i am in this forum and in touch wid it regularly since couple of months..but because of regular college studies cudnt really study something that is practically useful for step1.
Now, hving relaxed a bit..as i had planned...thot of starting preps for step1 more sensible..as am inholidays and can contribute significant time...for it.
but then..i hve confusions...in my mind...n please help me clear them...!...
i got a month in my hand..and ..suppose..if i mke a gud use of them..but after that..once my colleges start..i guess i cant really put anyday more than 3 hrs for this..and that again admist THE HOSTEL ATMOSPHERE, whre i really dont want to inform a single student that i m preparin for usmle..tht wil be a hoax..and for pretty other reasons..tke it in either way..if i wil be preparing in my hostel..i.e. once colleges reopens..it will always be in hidden way..
even from the close pals..i wud rather prefer to surprise them rather than disclosing out my secrets..
so..if i loose the regular touch wid step1..then...might be again i wud hve to wait for nxt holidays..to study for it?...but again they wud only be ..for 1.5months...that too after one whole year..in 2008 june.
i will never have 3-4 lavish months with me at stretch to fuel in all. at once.
Wont the preps stretch too much.?..in my case?
or..u guys..suggest me to do as much as i can do now..and then..allthough at antspead..continue in college as much as possi?
or..i for the time being..can select few imp subs...do them properly.like patho ..physio..pharmac....and leave step1 untill i graduate?..ie. in 2009??
or..pack up step1 now itself..and only leave step2 to give after graduateion?
i hope u ppl get my confusion?
or still... u ppl suggest..3 hrs.everday(I.E. MAXIMUM I CAN PUT IN WHILE IN COLLEGE) will be enuf??to carry on.my studies?

yah...Also to add...
after i return 4m Russia..(ie where i m graduating) bck to india..after i complete the screen test of my country..i would have to compulsorily do 2years as internship in India..
So..even if i hurry up n cmplete step1 smehow b4 my graduation day...i guess..within 6months max..i can give step2 too durin internship
still i hve then 1.5 years left wid me..n i guess.might be for nothing?coz..in any case..i wont leave the 2 year interhship in india..n go to US..i mean..i will hve to complete it..to gain registration in india?
or..to slowdown...juz do impsubs..for the time being..and use the TWO yers of internship..steadily for step1 and then step2??..and as the other pople say..students grow mature..when they appear in step1 aftr graduation???
coz..once i m into internship..might be..my time limitation will be the same..not morethan 3-5hrs everyday..but i wil be out of the pressure of hostel life..where i really dont want people to know abt it.
Thats not a point of discussion why id ont want to disclose..it can be coz of plenty of reasons..including my nature itslef haha..but in anycase
cud you please drop in the best suggestion as per urself?
wht wud u hve done if u were in my fix?????
or...one more plan?
do step1 now...do step2 within 1st year of internship..and while i m whilingaway time in 2nd year of internship..to apply for australian/NZ exams too?

Hi luckyjak, I am not familiar with your medical school's system, maybe you should wait for someone who is from your own county to advice you but I think I would concentrate in doing very good in med school, the Steps are material you see in med school, so if you study really hard, maybe have only a couple of review books for step 1 like FA or BRS, you can just try to compare what is the material that USMLE focuses on to get yourself familiar with it.
I am telling you this because I feel that studying for USMLE is time consuming and in med school we sometimes don't have it, and in your case since you are going to be so worried that your friend's don't see you it is going to be tough.
In another thread I read, that someone wrote that even though USMLE step 1 is of basic science, the way they ask you is very clinical, so maybe after finishing med school, you are going to have all your basic subjects still fresh but with the added bonus that you will have more clinical experience that will help you not only with step 1 but with step 2 ck and cs.
What I do recommend you to do is to START SAVING MONEY, this is such a very expensive journey, and you are always going to have expenses and life happens, but if you start putting into an account little by little, once you get out of med school, you won't have any trouble with the cost of books, exams, plains for interviews, etc.
You can also focus right now, in trying to find ways to get a clerkship in the US, research the internet for specific requirements of programs, maybe you can even do your intership, do research get published, volunteer, extra curricular activities that will help your CV and make you a strong candidate.

I suggest, get an orientation for the USMLE. You will realize that the foundation for USMLE preparation is sound basic knowledge of your subjects. And thats what you can do now, openly, in your hostel without the fear of disclosing it to your hostelmates - STUDY YOUR TEXTBOOKS. When you are solid in your subjects you will see that its a breeze to pick up a review book and scan through it - the USMLE style.

yolanda..i cant think of doin clerkship in US for the time..since i really hvent cleared atleast one single step yet..so it doesnt give me much confidence to put in 2-3k us$ taking in to consideration i belong to middle class
Regarding research work..?..i tried finding it in my country of study ie. Russia..but almost of no use..can i contribue somethin online?
Can you really help me..wid more info..on how can i improve my profile now??
Also..Bioguy...--i have gone through few chapters in both physio and pharmac..and what i found was..a completely different world..the subjects and topics taught in russia according to thier system r lowyeild nd not even mentioned in kaplan...and similarly..kaplan topics werent even taught in medskul..i mean..their preferences r difft...
So.even then u will prefer...me studying same buks??...
Can u please throwbit more light..and suggest me.?

i understand clearly ur disturbance believe me , although i am not in ur country but i have almost same situation but u know what i decided?? i will study this holiday for 2 mo & after that i will take diagnostic test & c what score i will get & based on that i will decide when 2 take step 1

got ur hands on dvd or audio & will feel kaplan ppl give alot of guidance regarding what r the high yield & tricks on xam also do goljan audio he gives good calrification not only 4 patho but also for other subjects... good luck

ur life would b easier f u r open
ur collage may contribute 2 ur studying may b there r ppl who wants 2 prepare, or those who want study partner even f study group is not ur style just sharing experience, plan, strategies, study material is very helpful i mean isnt that what we do in this forum??

hye, i am not aware of the russian system of medicine, maybe i am not the right person to suggest you about this. its unfortunate that medicine is taught with different priorities in different countries.

Very similar situation over here too!
This is how i see it: for me time is more important than money, super duper grades and having fun in summer vacations. So, i decided to go for it while studying at school (step1) and probably give step2 in my clinical years cuz im sure that if i dont do that ill hate my self so bad after graduation and ill regret my procastination. If you want to make sure of that go ahead and ask the guys that gave the exam after graduation and stayed in their parents homes for about a whole year what they think! Sure theyll tell you to go for it unless, your planning to get something neer 999.9/99.9! If otherwise go ahead. Start youre prep. dont let any bastards know what your planning on! and do it step by step on your prefered pace and the good thing about it is that you can always forget about the whole thing if you end up changing your mind. If you start now youll have about 4 years to do these two steps ... so do them when ever you feel confidant enough...

Dear students ... are you willing to really start and give the prep. most of your time ?
- can you mention the subjects that you are willing to study now untill you learn the others at school?
- at least lets set some sort of goal to achieve each day ... so we stop wasting so much time ...
like 40 pages or 3 lectures or so and so hours (i hate this method) or any other way you might find useful... that would keep us going no matter what...
... what do you think ?

Cool, im doing physio. now. I thought it would be a good idea to start with the most basic subject that other subjects build up on. Biochem ---> physio. as so on.
So, what do you think would be appropriate as a bottom line for us to do each day?
