here i am, [almost] literally breaking my head over those darn biochem pathways. and i ask you, who cares? like how many times while examining a patient are you required to consider the bloomin' path a teensy glucose molecule takes, and which enzymes help it get there? i mean, really, whoooo caaaares? i've never felt the need to open my bc book after passing my exam[nd doing quite well, surprizingly], and if that made me a bad doctor, my patients didn't feel so. i enjoyed my job more. and now i'm back with the darn pathways and those enzymes again, and my life has lost what little joy it had left[considering that i'm preparing for the step 1] somebody help me out of this corner i find myself in. another bunch of folks that need our help are the geniuses who decided that the way to enliven their life was to figure out how lipids are stored in out body and what happens if you eat too much raw eggs[it seems you become deficient in biotin] i mean, y'all may be brainiacs and all, but seriously, get some help. and stop torturing people like me. i'm a good person. and if anybody else is being tortured by bc, what do you say we meet every friday night and bitch about it? [p.s. let's not include mol bio, coz i kinda like it]

Biochem is very largely useless, clinically. I'm comfortable with just knowing what's in my high-yield 'First-Aid' book and getting on with my life.

wow wow!!! biochem is the mechanism on which medicine is based. life is nothing but an intricate biochemical process. mechanism guys! mechanism! thats what dr. goljan keeps saying. and thats biochemistry. biochemistry in an organ and its interaction with the system constitutes physiology. biochemistry gone bad constitutes pathology. biochemistry is the means of understanding a disease. biochemistry altered by drugs makes pharmacology. but ofcourse, having said all this, i too hate to superficially study and memorize the pathways.

Bioguy .......... I hate to Burst Ur Bubble but Paheli is right can u exactly tell me tht apart from a DKA management u actually had to use these Pathways. The Use of that Clincial Knowledge as u put it will be only used when a pt of one of the Storage diseases comes to u or face an Alcoholic otherwise unless u r planning to go into Nutrition then its something else but till then i dont think Even the AMGs must think that unless there is a pt with a specific biochem relation the Pathways largely Remain in the Black Hole Area of the Medical World Clinical Practice.

guys...I know its been a torture for all of us since the college days but just think the other way...think you never knew about these pathways...just erase them from your brains...all of them...how would you be able to interprete anything without the pathway somewhere in the back of your brains?? it would be like those 3 dimension pics...you would only see the SEEN face but never the deeper one ! now that u know them u feel so but if u didnt ...even the simplest disease would be hard to get ... (+ dont dive deep in pathways...nothing except the related disease and the RLE was asked in my exam )

i completely agree with you nnl! well, i have to agree with anyone with an opinion! because opinions are usually based on requirements. a clinician seeing patients everyday will obviously favor things the are required to treat a patient. so the opinion that biochemical pathways are not so needed to remember. actually, when it comes to the fundamentals, there is no need for nomenclature either - say an experienced surgeon does need to remember so and so artery is beneath so and so muscle before he cuts that muscle. but he doesn't need to remember their names, does he? (unless he is teaching/communicating). nevertheless, when he was an anatomy student he definitely needed to remember the name of that artery, because that is how it is learned.

well, you don't want to incur the wrath of the other subjects (micro, pharma, path etc.), for killing their mate

Hi Paheli, I was like you in medschool, hated biochem to the core. The first thing I did after I came back from my final biochem exam is throwing the book forcefully with such hate into the deepest corner of my bookshelf. Unfortunately or fortunately it is the only subject that got me a distinctionin my medschool. I 've felt like crying for that too. I cant understand it till date....because I never really understood why I should read that subject. But hey! same with the steroid metabolism page in medicine DHEA androstenedione and hydroxysteroid and stuff- would flip the page when it came to that. But Lo and behold - life gets you.........that page was my life for 4 years of phD. I thought about that from the time I woke up, driving, cooking, shower, eating till I went to bed......SO BOTTOM LINE DONT HATE IT TOO MUCH ......you might get a chance to master it some day and be the pro at it! Sometimes such intimidating thing like biochem or anything for that matter ........I take it as a challenge and tell the book " Just watch I will conquer you". Works for me at times! Take care.
