Hi, I am a FMG I graduated in 2006 Jan and I am done with my USMLE step-1 and step-2 ck and cs. I have passed all the steps on my first attempt and I have 99 on both step-1 and step-2 ck. But I want to know your opinion about wether it will be better to go for an observership and get a US LOR or go for USMLE step-3. The observership is in a non teaching hospital. Please give your opinion because I heard it will be fine if we have Step-3 result by the time of interviews but some were saying step-3 is much better than getting 1month of observership and getting an US LOR to get interview calls. Kindly give your opinion on this like which will be helpgul for getting more interview calls and maximise my chances.

It all depends in what you want regarding visa issues (if you have step 3 you can apply for HIB visa). But in matters of getting more interviews I think it would help you a lot more to have US clinical experience although an observership is not that good because it is not "hands-on". But you still have something and that is better then nothing and you would be getting some LOR's which are a must to get more interviews. If you are able to get a more hands on experience do so but if not go for the observership. I've seen a lot of experiences from IMG's having 99 in both steps but no clinical experience and getting much less interviews then IMG's with 80sh scores but generous USCE. Go for it and Good luck! On the other hand, why not apply for step 3 and in the mean time do your observership? It takes a long time for the application anyways, that way you could take 2 ducks with one bullet to my point of view, but if you can't do both do the USCE (unless you are very interested in getting H1B)

thanks for the reply GLO MD I have applied for my step-3 and I wanted to know because if I am not able prepare well for my step-3 then will it be fine if I can go for observership and give my step-3 in the first half of september. I was in two minds because some were saying that we need to have result for step-3 by last week of august. I want a H-1 B but I was not sure wether doing an observership and getting an LOR or going for step-3 will be more helpful to get interview calls.

Go for the observership my friend.... I've seen lots of programs and the closest deadline for having step 3 results in order to get H1B visa is october 31 (and it was just one program), the rest asked for results in february. You have plenty of time to take it and you need your USCE presto to name it in your cv!! Good luck!! Let me know how it went, I'm also going to take it very soon.

THis is July .Application will be filed in september .You have done all exams .You have all the time in the world to do both .Do observership and also register for step 3 .this is the hard way round this problem but this is the better way round ..Observership/uslor will help . step 3 will also help for sure in getting you more calls .Which one would help more -there is no universal answer to this .For some programs your uslor will help and for some step 3 .Having both will help in all programs .Why waste time ? make use of all the time you have on your hand to study for step 3 while you wiat for the observership . you are done with step 2 ck so step 3 is no forbidden land for you .Give it by mid september .
