Hello Arlete, I love your story. I am going to take the exam on 9th of July, Can you believe I have 4 more days, then I will be done? I am an old grad, too, and when I read stories like yours, I feel like "rejuvenated". Good luck to you with your score. Keep your fingers crossed for me.....

I didn't mean it literally. I can't believe though that you went through all this trouble for the sake of answering my question. Thanks so much. After reading your message and seeing how you juggle everything,I think you will go far with your attitude. I'm ashamed to be complaining. I have a preschooler who will be attending preschool comes september. 4 days a week for 3 hours. Meanwhile,we are going to playdates, playgroups and field trips. Playground... I usually will take my notes with me but never even glance at them. mommy help me mommy this and that, still not selfreliant even during playtime.I'm my kid's buddy if you will. I hope it will get better once school starts. Having said that I still think that if you do all that I should be able to manage all right. I wish you the score of your dreams. I think it will be well deserved and will make everything worth it for you and your family,

usmile2: It gets easier and easier with their growing (to the point that my 8 years old won't hold my hand at school because he gets embarassed...:no . You are going to have more and more time for yourself, that you'll probably spend studying. But sometimes I tell my kids "go look for something to do" and I always say if they are bored, it's none of my business... Maybe with three we have to be a little tougher... I am rooting for you, you can and will succeed! khorshid and doc1981: Thank you... I intend to go to the swimming pool, Chuck and Chees and Baskin Robins a lot, now!

NE: Thank you! I am already trying to make up for them, but it's getting expensive... Movie theaters, swimming pool, zoo... And we end up eating somewhere... Oh, well... At least blowing bubbles at the backyard is for free!

LOL! You are a great audience ! It's so nice to have you guys going through all I am, all the angst and highs and lows of somebody trying to get there...again... I have a bunch of good friends that can relate to my "mom condition", but none of them is a doctor. So they have a vague idea about it, but it's different then someone like you, that actually know how much we study and all the pressure we feel to know everything, to use everything we learned, to be constantly improving... And to not give up! Knowledge is power, power is responsability. Nobody chooses a carreer like ours lightly. And if somebody does it, pretty soon faces reality: it's a life full of challenges and pressure and happiness and sadness, and we deal with people at their most difficult times. Man, I can't wait to be a doctor again!

hi arlete... wow thats impressive how you managed to be a mom and do all that! You´re an inspiration to young mothers like me... I know you´ve read and answered my posts about taking CK while pregnant, but I would really like to ask you a question, I need your personal opinion, I need it from someone like you: I am an IMG graduated in 2005 and all I need to be ECFMG certified is this CK (I really cant wait until its over!)... well, the thing is I am planning to apply for this year´s match, so I´ll be entering residency (IM) hopefully on june 2008, while baby will be 10 months old. ppl has advised me to wait until 2009 match because handling with the residency and a 10 mo wont be easy (who said it would) but I really dont know yet how I would manage child care, cause I dont live in the States yet and we´ll have 24 hrs shifts every 3-4 days. My husband is doing the same and we´ll be couple´s match (I even purchased my ERAS token, so I am strongly considering applying this year with hubby), but could you please tell me your opinion??????? Thanks in advance and good luck with everything... looking forward to see how you did on your exam!!! (dont doubt you did great!!!)

ARLETE: YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST, WITH ALL MY ADMIRATION. Your kids will for ever benefit from your hard work at the end of the day, your husband is a elemental piece of machinery on your enterprise... and friends... they understand and they are always there... true friends. CONGRATULATIONS. Salute!

Allymd and werther: Thank you... Allymd: I don't think I can properly answer your question, since I didn't deal with this kind of situation. But I know people are able to. Some women get pregnant during the residency, with no family around. You have to pray for God sending you the right help, you'll certainly need. And you'll need peace of mind, that your baby will be well taken care of, so you can be a dedicated doctor. The little information I can give you: some hospitals offer daycare, it will probably be from 7 AM to 6 PM. You'll have to check if this is available for residents, and have a schedule for drop off/pick up with your husband. If you have to pay day care, for this period, it will be something aroud $950 a month. You'll need somebody to cover the nights both you and your husband will be working at the same time, I think a babysitter makes at least $7 an hour. The best option would be somebody living with you, maybe helping with the laundry, cooking for the baby, doing dishes, but I am not sure what the salary would be. There's a modality called "au pair", they are foreigners that come to study in USA, and you pay all their living expenses plus $149 a week, and they yake care of the kids. I think the big catch is that you pay for all the visa process, that is not cheap. You can google the information about it.

After months of lurking, I finally registered just so I could get in on the conversation about USMLE and babies. Perhaps we should move it to another thread, cuz I'm in the exact same boat. Took Step 1 while on bedrest with my second (first was 2 years old and in daycare). Took the exam a week before the C-section. Started studying for Step 2 right away (amazing how much you can study while nursing) and am now waiting for the score, hopefuly this week. Will take CS on August 6. Am an older student, second career, studying in the caribbean. Daycare for two will chew up my earnings, but there are few choices. Fortunately, I have family I can count on, but still. . .
