Hi! Anyone has any suggestions about applying to programmes only with Step 1 and CS? I will now start studying for the CK, but I don´t know when I should take it?? I thought mid October maybe, so that programmes would get my results by the beginning of November... or would it be a better idea to apply after the ECFMG certification, or not applying at all and waiting until next year in order to get some USCE?? Thanks for your help!

First of all as long as I know you can't be certified by the ECFMG if you don't have step1, step 2 ck and cs, so if you are aiming for certification remember that you have to have all those and your medical diplomma to start the process. If anyone else has a different opinion I would be glad to hear it because that way I can correct myself. Take care and good luck with step 2 ck.

it is allways better to be ECFMG certified before the season starts... however you can apply for match missing an exam! some programs will consider you without cert...

research the programs you are considering to find out their criteria for applications...

Thanks for your comments Glo MD and CocaCola!! I guess it would be wiser to wait then, especially since I have no USCE or LOR´s... what do you guys think?

And Glo MD, yes you are right! You can´t be certified unless you pass Step 1 and 2 (CK and CS), but what I didn´t know was if programmes would even consider giving you an interview if you weren´t certified or if your cert would come along later before the intervies, let´s say mid november...

according to the threads i read there are some people who interviewed without certification...
if you don't wanna wait another year i would recommend putting in your application come sept 1st.. you will get interviews - especially if your have great step 1 scores! Apply smart - do your homework...
don't sacrifice a good step 2 grade to join the match this year - in other words - grades are usually the way programs narrow their list, so try to get as good grade as possible... not saying you won't match without stellar grades - just saying better grades open more interview doors!
getting USCE is great but unless you have something lined up already there is really no guarantee you will get a spot...

Thanx Coca cola for the advices , I am in the same situation and this thread has helped me too , thanx hcm 11 for starting the thread.
I have another qn though, Coca cola what do you mean when you say apply smart , do your home work? does that mean go thru the web site of each and every program and look for the criteria ? if so, what else do we need to do? you mean there are programs which dont say that they need us to be ECFMG certified? and if we apply before sept 1st with just step 1 and step 2 CS will we be able to update our step 2 CK scores just in case we do take the exam and we do get the score before they call us in for an interview? and will there be programs which would not call us with just ste 1 and 2 CS and would call us once we provide them with our 2 CK score in october or sometime?
I know some qns of mine might sound silly or difficult to answer, but pls bear with me, try to answer them, I just need a rough idea on how to go about it. Cos I dont want to wait for one more year.
Thanx

we are all n the same situation - dying for a residency placement, and not knowing how to go about it! so what i know i share, and what you know you share! its how we master this process...
Apply smart and do your homework - check each program on your list to see if you are a possible candidate for their program... in your case don't apply for programs that require ECFMG certification to be considered for interview... email programs that seem good for you - ask specific questions that enable you to get a better picture of their program... there are programs that don't require ECFMG cert - please don't ask me to list themsmiling face
Your scores will be updated on ERAS... i believe they will be updated automatically from ECFMG to ERAS...
i have a friend who took her last exam in Sept... had only two interviews in nov and matched... so it is possible...

score 95 is the level one kap teacher said, apply with either one step only with high mark like 95, but do not apply with fail st . If no fail step, one st is 95 st 1 or 2 , pl do apply he said, if can done all step b4 match , even b4 residency start if not in the match, but get interview, prematch .

Hope it helps . I saw , heard friends did like that with one step only pass even in 88 or 87 when apply on Sept 01, I thought only that yr. is special or they all lucky with prematch , but now the kap teacher comfirm my friends advice .

GL & congrat [ on 95 , pl share your exm experinces, if already did , will look for it , thanks]nodnod

Dear ShweHope99.9998, thank you for your advice, I think I'll go for it, for some programs at least, it's actually just the money I can lose... and if I match, well, that's a plus!!! Here is my experience:

So, I decided to keep my doors open!!! Maybe you guys in the same position should do the same!!! I just bought my token.. if I finally use it and match, well, that would be superb.. if not... well, I will only be 75$ poorer... take care, good luck to all!!!

By the way, there are a lot of programs which don´t require your ck score until they rank you!!!

If anyone of you guys is still reading this, I have already gotten 2 interviews without CK score... as thought, will take a little longer to take the exam, but anyways, I think the suffering of the application process, which by the way is the cause of my delay on taking the CK, seems to be paying off!! good luck to you guys, maybe you still have time to apply if you haven't done so yet!!

  #17

Hey, that's great news! Good luck in the match and with step2ck!!!
