Hello, I thought I would start this thread because no matter how many times I think I got it down, after a few weeks I still get confused.

My querry is the following:

Can I get you guys/gals to establish an easy way of remembering the key organisms according to age groups for :

Pneumonia(children, adults, older adults and elderly),

Meningitis (Agalactiae etc..)and

Infectious Endocarditis (IV drug abuser etc..)

so Im gonna start w/ Meningitis

Newborn <6 months ----> 1)Group B streptococci, 2) E coli 3) Listeria


Children 6months-6yrs--->1)strep. Pn, 2)Neisseria Meningitidis, 3)H.Influenza(especially if Hx mentions no immunization)

6 yrs -60 years-----> 1)Neisseria Meningitidis,2)Enteroviruses, 3)HSV


>60+------> 1)Strep. PN, 2) Gram - rods and 3) Listeria

* HIV -------> cryptococcus, CMV, Toxoplasmosis, JC virus

Common causes of Pneumonia:

6 weeks -18 years old: 1.- Virus (RSV) 2.-Mycoplasma 3.-C. pneumoniae
4.-S. Pneumoniae

18-40 yr: 1.-Mycoplasma 2.-C.pneumoniae 3.-S. pneumoniae

40-65 yr: 1.-S.pneumoniae 2.-H. influenzae 3.-Anaerobes 4.- Viruses
5.- Mycoplasma

Elderly: 1.- S.pneumoniae 2.-Viruses 3.- Anaerobes 4.-H. influenzae
5.-Gram negative rods

mcc of pneumonia in Special groups:

Nosocomial ( hospital acquired) : 1) Staph 2) gram (-) rods

Immunocompromised: 1) Staph 2) Gram (-) rods 3) Fungi 4) Viruses 5) HIV.....Pneumocystis carinii

Aspiration: 1) Anaerobes

Alcoholic/IV drug abuser: 1) S. pneumoniae 2) Klebsiella 3) Staph.

Postviral: 1) Staph 2) H. influenzae

Atypical: 1) Mycoplasma 2) Legionella 3) Chlamydia

Neonate: 1) Group B strep 2) E. coli.

awesome contribution jean robert... sometimes simplistic charts like these are a great help for me. Im thinking of writing them out and taping to my washroom mirror so that I can remember it cold!!grin
