Hi! i am in a dilemma....i am an old grad 2002 with ob/gyn postgraduation in my country.I am considering a switch to IM here.I hav a good step 1 score (99), and i hope to clear step2 and get certified by sept.My problem is that all the work i've been doing after graduation is in obg and my LORs are from obg too, just one from IM. Is it possible to switch and still get a good program here? Do i hav to get some proof of my interest in IM(like more LORs)...i am not sure if i can do that b4 the match cos i'm studying fulltime now ...no time for observerships etc. What wud i hav to do to maximise a chance of matching in IM? The reason why i want to switch is cos of the litigation which is higher in obg, does anyone hav an idea? Any input is appreciated ...thx!

Well, I hope your LORs say how good a DOCTOR and person you are, not how good an obstetrician you are. Then you are safe. It's OK to change specialty, since you are starting all over again. During the interview, say you always liked Internal Medicine as much as OBG, in fact, the cases of pregnancy complicated with cardiopathy/rheumatological diseases/diabetes etc were the ones you thought more interesting during your practice, etc. Always say how interesting and vast IM is, don't mention litigation, or difficulty getting into it, so you won't look like a coward. I think you'll nail it during the interview. Just be sure that's what you want, because if you really like obg, I don't see why not keep doing it...

You can make your case in your personal statement, explaining why you are interested in IM recently and how your obsgyn experience can bring benefit to you while pursuing IM speciality.

hey its not a big thing. lot of people do that. My friend did it. you just have to make your ps so that you can say how handling medical emergencies in gyn obs made you realize that you would want to be an internist.

Any doctor is exposed to litigation, that's what insurance is for...
