A 32 y.o. man is revived after having been submerged underwater for 15 min. You re concerned that he has sustained hypoxic damage to his brain. Which of the following structue would most likely be damaged?


a.-Claustrum
b.-Layer 2 of the cerebral cortex
c.-Purkinje layer of the cerebellum
d.-Subiculum
e.-Mammillary bodies

C is a classic answer, I think thats what u r fishing for. Glutamate toxicity.

Subiculum is also vulnarable. But then again if you are submerged underwater for 15 min, if not the water is icy cold, your brain pretty much starts to turn black.

The purkinje cell layer of the cerebellar cortex,pyramidal cells in the CA1 subfield of the HIPPOCAMPUS, and pyramidal cells in layers 3 and 5 of the CEREBRAL CORTEX are all very sensitive to the effects of cerebral hypoxia and ischemia.

The basis for this selective vulnerability may be NMDA receptor excitotoxic injury of these specific populations of neurons.
