How do you differentiage between malignant hyperthermia and bactermia post op.

Both have: high fever (more than 103-104), chills, and occur minutes after surgery?

In malignant hyperthermia look for succinylcholine or halothane use, but what else to differentiate from the presentation of both?

I think muscle rigidty should make us think of malignant hyperthermia

Bacteremia is a form of sepsis "infection in the blood "and it would be caused by a not sterile techinique in the OR

Malignant Hyperthermia would caused by an anesthetic agent.

there is a genetic predisposion to MH and it could happen during the trasoperatory
"during the surgery"

I don't think a bacteremia that will cause such a high fever can occur "minutes" after surgery. Give those little bugs some time to replicate!!

It certainly is possible.
Bacteremia can occur within less than an hour of invasive procedures. (about 30-40 minutes).. It can happen with insturmentation of the urinary tract. You will see chills, and temperatures or more than 104F. You'll have to do blood cultures X3 and start empiric antibiotics.

in Malignant hyperthermia you'll have: muscle rigidity, muscle soreness, acidosis, hyperkalemia, hyperuricemia, hyperphosphatemia, increased CPK, and you may have rhabdomyolysis and therefore dark urine. plus you may have pos family history.
