Theophylline causes intracellular shift of potassium.

E. Albuterol is the correct answer.

they don t really give a great explanation in the book.
They just mention that Beta agonist cause poatassium to shift into cells, resulting in hypokalemia.
This question is from FIRST AID Q&A FOR THE USMLE STEP1.
Someone else has a better explanation???

yes E
one of the common cause of hypokalemia is albuterol doses.
also associated with glucose insulin drip to hyperkalemic pt. severe asthmatic attack leads to metabolic n respiratory acidosis.
this is the time when we intubate pt. also multiple albuterol nebulizations given.

hey i thought prednisolone.........
if he is on steriods for long he can easily develop hypokalemia.............might be taking dexamethasone on regular basis??????????

anyway i got the answer.....
i want to ask one Q....
is albuterol like salmeterol a long acting beta agonist????

i dont know what is the answer....but if it is then it shud not be given in acute conditions.

someone help!!!!!
