how exactly does an electrical cardioversion reverse the abnormal rythms of the heart?

Basically it resets all the cardiac cells at once, including the overactive foci, and supresses any reentrance mechanism, because the eletricity runs in one way only. Everything becomes refractory at once, and the cells with greater capacity of generating eletrical impulses take the rhythm over(hopefully the sinoatrial node).
