hi
i have graduated in 2003 and just finished my residency in Pediatrics in my home country. For some reasons I 'have to' apply for the coming match (Pediatrics)
this is my timetable

step 2ck - 1st week July
step 1 - 2nd week august
CS 1st week September

I'm planning to apply between 15th to 20th September (hoping to have my step 1 and CK scores by then and would have just given step 2CS.

i have no USCE, us LORs, publications but should manage good scores.

guys truly tell me my chances of matching...say on a scale of 0 to 10.

ouch that's a very very tight one....

yes its doable first of all you should apply by the 1st of sept and i think the timetable is too tight for step1 especially. though it all depends how you plan it and how much time you are willing to spend since scores are important and esp for a competitive program like paeds...

as far as how to go about it is concerned you can refer to the respective forums...as far as my advice goes FA and kaplan notes and UW are the most imp tools to crack it

make a plan though yes it is too tight i would also suggest that you give step 2 cs early since these have specific deadlines and i think with residency experience that you have it should not be difficult for you try to give it before july 14th and alongside also prepare step2ck..first get hold of the books and see the content it has been a long time since you might have last read about gynae or int med or psychiatry or surgery ...

and last but definitely not the least best of luck...browse the different work strategies and assess your own strengths but do not compromise on the scores...if its not this match then it would be next yearnod

totally agree with doc_2004... excellent advice... especially the last paragraph!nod
try to score well... many programs recieve hundreds of applications... best way to shorten that list is by "weeding out" applicants according to step scores...

not saying you won't match with less than stellar scores... just saying better scores open more interview doors!

if i do manage 95 + in both the steps (not overconfident...but i am putting in hard work. and doing nothing except studying 4 steps. i have done abt 70 % of UWorld 2CK q bank and am averaging 73%, will finish the rest of UW in next 5 days and then revise for the last one week before the exam. i started UW and studying for step 2CK on 3rd of june. my study material for step 2 is kaplan notes and few chapters from CMDT, i have also read behav sciences kaplan notes because its not limited to step 1)

coming back to it if i do manage 95+ in both the steps. but no USCE, us LORs or publications. can i make it ? lots of people have told me to apply on the 1st of sept (yes i have read all those blogs abt its importance) and i guess i will apply on the first and then do the step 2CS.

tell me the chances guys it wont hurt even if its 1/1000 !

what besides studying for good scores should i be doing right now. i have started to read about writing a good person letter. i will get my LORs only in August. what else do i need to do NOW ?

isn't steps more than enough for now raised eyebrow

1st september is very important and i advise cs before 14th jan so that you have your result in before september

in addition to the excellent advice above,i think u shd hv a look at the step1 books as it wd hv bn a realllly long time since u did patho,micro n biochem...i wd suggest u apply fr CS asap(as doc_2004 said).get the earliestestest date possble as preparing fr it wdnt b a problem fr u at all...ck UW scores r excellent...so once u hv CS and CK out of yr way...u cd focus on step1.and pls pls apply the day u get any of yr scores( u ll get CK first)...and then the application can b updated as n when the rest of the scores cm in...
alll the verrry best....do the best and leave the rest to God...match 2008 is verry much possible...good luck

if programs as for LORs, but you are unable to provide them, will they discard your application even if you have good USMLE scores?

I think that they review for the entire application. One program asked for 3 US LORs for application. They give me an invitation although I only had only one US LOR 2 month after the application.

It depends on each program

Good Luck motorola ,u really encourged me because i'll also agraduate of 2005 did only clinical attachment ,still didn't find any residency programme in the country that i live in
also i'm planning to do step 2 ck first ,i'm studying from first aid ,lecture note and q bank
and by the way what dose LORs &USCE stands for?

good luck motorola. ur post encouraged me.

i gave my CS on 25 june. will give CK on 21 july n step 1 on 31 aug. but seeing ur time lines was a bit encouraging. ur scores r impressive . u can do it .i intend to apply on sept 1. hopefully i will have two scores reported . keep in touch. u r great.

thanks doc08 and samar, just gave my step2ck yesterday...found the psyche part very tough. but m not looking back.. now its their headache to evaluate me...have started with step 1 preps...which is in 6 weeks time...
