For those that score 99s on Step 1, what types of residencies do you go for or get? I am very curious, because if you are all going into my desired field, I may be in trouble Oh, i am interested in IM, maybe heme-onc. Thanks.

Hi Ed, Do not worry 99er aim for competitive like AMG favorite one, surgery, anastesia, dermato, Radiology & big University . But generally so many reason to be 99er , not only ambitious to competitive, but year of grad, or just want to have it but simple & just want Fm Med or Int Med [ oh oh, just kidding , IM has alot of spot so no worry sis you'll be in that 99er too according to your study ] or Ped or psych etc . But for fellow heme-onco, I think 99 does not count much though may be partly , I might be wrong , but your residency program, performance at residency those count . But recently heme is too big , it will or already drop onco , so only choose heme or onco Ed ., may be no more heme-onco any more. GL Ed

Thanks, Shwe, for your comments. I will have to choose? Well, hopefully I can do electives in both next year and find my place in one or the other.

So i ended up in IM because I wanted it. As for Heme-Onc, scores are looked at but not the end all. And almost all programs are still Heme and Onc. I don't believe there are any plans to split the two.

Hi Ed, The fellow info I said is from good friend in current high end post at that field , but so many programs in states , so some may still stick to both, not ready to let go yet . But the fellow by your time might change too, worry later .Try both when get chance . As yang, why not cardiology, the surgeon .

Disclaimer I have not receive my scores yeat, and I might failed but. Internal medicine is competitve, in the past you just need it to have a PASS to get inn, but because ALOT of people are passing with so high grades and the US people are trying to get inn IM, is getting harder. Hem-onco. was really easy to get in untill now, that you can easily make more than 200 a year. But if you are still on school, and you pass the first time around you can get inn. The peoblem is that for example I know some one that score 99 in all steps, and last year did not match because she apply to harvard, corneil and bi shot places If next year she is open to apply in different places she will surelly get inn. Is how SMART you apply.

I don't know if you've ever seen this text, it is primarily devoted to fellowships but I guess it also partly applies to residency. http://www.im.org/AAIM/Pubs/Insight/Volume5Issue1... Credits should go to bbb who first posted the link. The point is that it seems that applicants overestimate the importance of high scores (not that they're not important, but not as important).
