hi all
i am hoping for surgery but ppl have discouraged me against it because they say its tough to get into categorical fter a preliminary year!! also i ve heard that these days AMGs r not taking General surgery as they r after more lucrative options like radiology, anesthesia etc so its relatively easy for IMG to get into Surgery.
seniors guide me through this

Hmmm this is news to me. You mean to say it's gettin better for FMG's ????shocked

  #14

i dont feel surgey will get easier or tougher for imgs i think it will rmain the same.

  #15

zygone this time the surgery thread is not as active as last yr. ur comments?

  #16

I think that they will give you the first year then fire you because you are IMG.

Some people think that actually you will have a better chance now, but I dont think so.

Also you want to be in a place that you can PRACTICE many many procedures so when you graduate, its not your first time doing it.

i agree with you gogeta

  #18

getiing into surgery is a hard nut to crack.

Why will some program hire you just so that they can fire you the next year. Personally I think that's ubsurd. It'll ususally be the fault of the resident who may act out with lot of pride or just be an ass. It's difficult to get in yes, but if they hire you i'm sure coz they like what they see not so that just give you one year in a categorical and kick you out the next.

As far as it being easy or difficult, I have heard both sides. People say it's getting easier, some say it's difficult, some say it's the same. It would jst depend on who's story you believe. Just one thing, the only reason why IM, FP, Psy is eaier to get in is coz the locals dont want it. The hospitals still need it and they dont know from where to get it. So any tom, dick and harry get's in. But even in these subjects the top notch univ's are hard to get in coz they'd rather have a local. To get into a competitive program like Ortho, Radio, Surg etc the locals want it too so you have to be worth it to be chosen over a local and that's why many of us dont get it and it's said as it's hard.

One thing here, marks aren't everything as most of us come from places where you need marks, ranks, or contacts to get it. It doesnt matter if you can differentiate an IV line from a central line nor if you worked as an intern to get experience or you just went to classes to prepare for the common entreance tests an excuse that you'll be learning it anyways' in first year of residency so why waste time now. Hard work and thinking at work does get appreciated here and often it's this what get's you ahead. So you be the judge and to decide whose story you believe you have to have some kind of experience working here to say what goes.

zygone gogeta was talking about the preleim surgery as most programs give rpelim spots to imgs so its like jiring u for one yr and thhen firing u

  #21

uhhhhhhh, if it is for one year then dont you leave at the end of the year ??????? I mean if you work somewhere and you have a contract for a year do u consider it as kicking you out at the end of the year or do u end your term at one year ??? Besides the say it's for a year and they rent saying "I promise to give you a spot at the end of the year" and thorowing oyu out do they. We know what we are getting into when we opt for a preliem spot...

there r differnt ways to look at same thing. though i dont have negative remarks about the whole issue but not a optimistic one too.
