UW says carbachol which is cholinomimmetic, can be used to rx paralytic ileus, also says that it can cause contraction of sphinctoer of oddi, and worsen the pain but carbachol is supposed to relax sphincters right?? it goes on and says that atropine is used to relax sphincter of oddi in acute pancreatitis??? i always thought cholinomimmetics relax sphincters except for lower esophageal sphincter. i would very much appreciate of someone can throw some light on this.

Good question... I'm not too sure why... Carbachol causes sphincter of oddi "spasm"... Sorry, that's all I know; I wish I had a better answer, but let us know if you find out.

what i think that cholinomimetics causes digestion by increasing peristalsis and relaxing sphincter of gut and promote secretion into gut.sphincter of oddi is directly proportional to other sphincter.,relaxed by cholinomimetics while contracted by antichol +sympathomimetics...antichols are thus contraind in biliary and renal cholic.,opiods are used to treat them
