hi all,
i have a quick question. this might sound a bit strange to some but i was wondering about when to drape the patient.
FA says when we are about to start the history part we must drape the patient so that we dont forget it later(i know i wont forget it but when i am tense i dont know if i will end up doing just that so want to avoid that situation). but when we enter the room the patient will be sitting on the table then how are we supposed to drape his legs?should we make the patient lie down and then drape him.
i always find it logical to start the draping part just before the physical exam so as to avoid any strange situation.
i mean it wud look strange that i drape the patient and then start the history part !!

I've draped right before starting the physical exam...

I think there is no best universal option, given you will remember to do that, it doesn't matter when exactly you've done.

thanks for the reply dncosta...i guess i'll just do it right before i start the physical exam.

of course you should do what makes you the most comfortable... as dncosta says it doesn't matter when you do it just as long as you use it during the PE...

I suggest you do it at the onset for two reasons -
1. its on the stool - so when you pick it up and sit down its easy to put it aside and not remember it during the physical exam
2. the patients legs are bare and placing the drape on the lap and legs is a good way to preserve modesty at onset of your encounter...

just don't forget ... and wash your hands before and after the encounter!

smiling face i try not to forget.....thanks a lot guyz.
cocacola, thanks for the tips...i'll try to fit that somehow right after i enter and before i start the history...i read an experience today in our forum and he said-"let me make yu more comfortable" and placed the drape on patients lap...now this seems a little less strange and yes yu have a point...the patient is only wearing a gown so it would be courteus to drape him before.
thanks guyz.

First thing you do when the announce comes to start the encounter is to watch the frontal page and do your notes, knock, open the door say: Mrs.....so and so?? to ask if it's the person real name they'll say yes shake their hand and ask: how are you doing this morning/afternoon?....If they say not good whatever just say... Oh I'm very sorry to hear that, let's see what we can do to change it (with a smile and looking at this person's eyes) Next say: My name is Dr soooo I'm going to be your doctor for today, I'm going to be asking some questions and performing a brief physical if I deem it necessary is that ok with you? , they'll say yes they have no option anyway and then you say: Ok let me start by covering you up a little and as smooth as that you take the drape from the stool beside you, unfold it and cover the patient legs very gently. After that you move the stool so it's in front of the patient sit on it like you are not even nervous and say: How can I help you Mrs/Mr...? or what brings you today? I like the how can I help you today because it makes the patient fill as if you are his/her friend that just knows a "little more medine "than him/her and you care for them and want to help to alleviate their current problem.
That's all no biggie if you make it a routine you will never forget any of the important steps and you'll do great!!! Good luck!!

you can drape the patint even before the start of interview , just to cover his /her thigh down during your P/E you may need to change the draping several times
Good luck.
