Hey Colleagues,
hope you have a knowledge to help me work out the right strategy.
I will be applying for match 2008. In my past life, I had a good clinical experience in both oncology surgery and pediatrics, and therefore I was going to apply for both these specialties at around 40-50 programs.
Now, I am in the place where I have a good chance to get into peds, and have low chances to get admitted into surgery (not an IMG-loving programsadsadsad)... So, I will need to send my application to the surgery programs around rather than here, in Madison, Wisconsin.
I was told that it not a good idea at all to put on a list programs from different specialties, because when I am invited to the IV and asked about programs applied to, I I will need to say (i.e. will have to be honest) that I applied for more than one specialty. I was told that this raises a big red flag to the program directors... For them it will be the biggest point to say that I am not a motivated applicant.
So, my questions are:
-do program directors know fine details of my application (like the list of specialties and programs)?
-can one upload two separate personal statements - one for surgery and another for peds - with some certainty that they will not be mixed up?
-did any of you guys have any dilemma like mine one???
Thanks a lot in advance.

dont know if programs know all the details of our appys - but doubt it...

yes you can upload more than one personal statement - you personally decide which documents you want sent to each program - just name your documents appropiately to avoid confusion - i.e. surgery personal statement, pediatrics personal statement...

1. Program directors will not know what other programs you apply to.
2. Yes, you can assign a Peds ltr to one program, an IM letter to others, etc. Check double check what you are sending where - it's the applicant that mixes them up usually, not ERAS
3. Many applicants apply for more than one specialty. There is more than 5-6 applicants doing it....

Good luck

BBB,
thank you for clarifications...

the one caveat I would say is in peds, medicine, and med-peds. I did this, and they obviously all knew about it. In a way, it was better that I applied to med-peds as opposed to either one by themselves. Only the med-peds people did not give me grief for doing this.

Sometimes the PC or PD in a smaller hospital would be the same person for multiple programs.

So, it would be relatively safe to apply for both surgery and peds? Or, it is better to make sure first that PD for these specialties within one hospital are two separate persons?
Thanks...

Since surgery is SO...O different from Peds, I would think it's ok to assume the PDs are not the same person. But, better safe than sorry.

It would be funny if you recieve IV's from both IM and FM in the same hospital. Ofcourse they will have different PC and PD, but what if one spots you all dressed up going to another specialty IV.sticking out tongue

Guys, thanks for replying...
I have an impression that you agree/know that applying for more than one specialty isn't a very good idea, and many precautions must be taken while doing that... Well, I still have time to decide what I want... Thanks to everybody and good luck with your match...
By the way, TOKEN application isn't activated yet...
