Does mannitol cause HYPO or HYPER -kalemia as an adverse effect?

Thanks.

it causes both Actually.

The Osmotic effect of Mannitol causes the the ICF and ECF water Depletion. the Initial effect is to remove the ECF water which causes the osmotic diuresis at the Tubular level. if Mannitol persists for long then osmotic diuresis leads to ICF water Depletion which again shifts the Ionic Concerntrations. Thus the Initial Hyperkalemia seen is due to the Water Shift from ICF to ECF further diuresis leads to Hypokalemia.

This is my understanding and 2 cents.

Plz Do Correct Me if i m wrong.

So which one is it finally? First hyper then hypo, so does it end up being normal? or end up being hypo?
