If a soldier is shot in the distal calf can anyone say:

1) Where you would put the torniquet?

2) And in clear, distinct, concise anatomical language what does a torniquet do?

tie the tourniquet in popliteal fossa, and it stops the blood flow by direct pressure smiling face

Sorry by my ignorance but...
Are you sure putting tourniquet?
I though we should apply just direct pressure and no more tourniquets because it can cause compartmental syndrome or ischemia...
I'll appreciate your answer.
thanks

ok this is from EMT days .. tourniqut is last resort only. Were talking medical attention that is one hour plus away, or profuse bleeding that is not controlled by direct pressure. You would only be doing this in the field, never in a hospital setting.

If you do have to place one, try to save the joint. In the above scenario your going to place it below the knee if at all possible. Give a couple of inches to allow the attachment of a prosthesis.

Once you place a tourniquet, the limb is done. A properly applied tourniquet will occlude both arterial and venous blood supply. You can not remove it, otherwise it will lead to reperfusion injuries.

But like I said, it's not really used anymore.
