Hi,
Ok this is the scenario which is not very good on paper but hopefully it would get me a match in internal medicine
2004 grad
IMG
Need visa
Step1 82 Step2 80 (both first attempts) yet to give CS
1 month USCE

What are my realistic chances of getting a match...and how are these sites adverstised about clerkships has anyone ever signed up for them and do they really do get you a clerkship or not..not enough time on my hand right now planning on clearing CS on first attempt by august and then applying in september and them maybe give step 3 somewhere in dec/ jan..any more suggestions....
Thanks all of you for your immense support as always...smiling face

oh 9 views and still no reply...wink...i know i know its one of the most common scenario which has been discussed to death but it still comes up in one form or the other..how to improve your miserable scores and get that awful CV back on track for a decent residency prog acceptance..

So anyone in this scenario why not come up together and let's do something about improving our CV..this is since most of the people who write about their match experiences have been those who got high 90s scores...anyone out there with a low score an IMG and no USCE..

ok, lets c what can be done. but before i begin i must tell u that i'm still a newbie and yet to gv my steps. but do have some knowledge on basis of what my seniors have told me and the net.
Ok, we can't do anything about the scores now. u have passed, first attempt! congratsnod
Now what gonna really help u is:
1. LORs- Try for more Observerships if ur presently in states
2. If u've not yet taken date for cs, take it asap, there's no need to postpone it till aug. I've heard that 15-20 days s good enough if u study n practice well.
3. To some voluntary work if possible in nearby community.
4. Search and programs that have no score limits.
5. Make ur personal statement interesting
6. Prepare to explain ur low scores on steps.
7. Lastly Pray, BEst OF Luckgrin

thanks 2k9 for your detailed response..highly appreciate it....

yes that's true you don't need that much time for CS but my problem is my visa as well haven't as yet received it but it would be somewhere close to end of july thus no choice but to stay with august as being the earliest choice...

scores yeah one thing best is the first attempt..

observerships well not in US thus right now not possible...i wonder if i am there by august would it matter if i try to manage during that time prior to the interviews

Step3..was wondering if an excellent score in it before the interview or a good pass of 80 in it would be great..do they see these scores in the interview as a sort of explanation for the bad scores scored in earlier steps

Program Search...yes have already started work on that ..so currently lots of emailinggrin

Community Work...hmmm...now this is something new...

with those scores don't worry. You will get something somewhere. Those are actually decent scores. While it is true that you should get as high a score as you can, really, as long as you pass, you will get something somewhere. Don't fret!

...Just remember that there is always a reason that some applicants don't match - interview skills, fit in a program, etc.......
Good luck!gringrin

thanks a lot again bbb for your kind and supportive inputs..

yes i will try my best to be the perfect for the program the plan is to first devise a list with all the minimum requirements for all IM programs ...as far as the interview is concerned yes would try my best..we just need to support each other in itgrin

so I actually know a 99/99 guy who didn't match last year, but this year pre-matched at Rush. Usually as bbb says, there is a reason. Othertimes, it was just a fluke that is rectified the next time

Hi bbb:
What do you think is the most important thing in interview?????
Communication skills, fluency, body language, clothes, knowledge? I know its a combination of all those but for you, which comes first, and what is last?
Thanks

The most important thing is "Fit" - how you fit in a program......

i guess this sums it all...the "fit" and this is i think the most difficult also

bbb, do generally program directors see a good step 3 score and take it as a cover up for a low (low 80s) score or is s3 only valid for H-1 programs?

  #14

how are these online personal statement and resume editors are they worth the price?

to bbb especially,
is it worth going for it?

No. They aren't worth it. Write your own PS based on your experiences, etc.

Step 3 pass is needed for a H1 visa. A step 3 fail is not good regardless if the program sponsors that visa or not.

p.s. Give me a chance to answer - I don't normally hang here on the weekends.
