Info i felt was a bit helpful to a first time residency applicant like myself... from the ERAS website...

Information for International Medical Graduates
ECFMG has requested that all international medical graduates follow the listed procedures outlined below. Adherence to these procedures will expedite the processing of your application.

Do not send two-sided copies (back-to-back). Do not staple documents.

If the MSPE and transcript are not written in English, please include a certified English translation. Do not send the translator's certification.

You must reference all documents with your AAMC ID, especially your photograph. If your photograph is detached from the rest of your documents, and is not referenced with your AAMC ID, we will be unable to determine to whom the photograph belongs.

Do not scan any documents yourself. Send a photocopy and let ECFMG do the scanning.
These are the documents ECFMG can and will scan and attach to your file:

Original color photograph, wallet size or passport type, about 2.5 x 3.5 inches

Original of your MSPE with certified English translation, if not in English.

Copy of your medical school transcript or an English translation (up to 5 pages)

Original Letters of Recommendation signed by the letter writer in blue ink

California Application Status Letter or Receipt Notice (if applying to California programs)

Copy of Fifth Pathway Certificate
Documents will be shredded after use. They cannot be returned to you, faxed to programs not participating in ERAS, or used for the next ERAS application year.

Note: A new service known as the Return of Document Service (RODS) was implemented in February 2007. This service will allow applicants to request the return of eligible ERAS documents. If you have any questions regarding this new service, please contact eras-support@ecfmg.org.

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) applying to programs in California may submit the Applicant Evaluation Status Letter issued by the Medical Board of California to ECFMG for scanning as one of the four letters of recommendation. Call it "California Letter", and assign it to the California programs.

Please do not send any additional documents, such as a copy of your ECFMG certificate, curriculum vitae, personal statements, copies of your USMLE Step scores or a TOEFL score. Do not send copies of your medical diploma, or your license or certificate of registration from your home country, as the ECFMG Status Report also indicates the status of your credentials. Please, do not send copies of personal documents, such as your U.S. Alien Card, Birth Certificate or Name Change Certificate. These documents will not be scanned or transmitted.

USMLE scores can only be reported as part of an official USMLE transcript. Therefore, ECFMG can no longer include USMLE scores in the ECFMG Status Report. If you took USMLE Step 1 and/or Step 2 for ECFMG Certification, the ECFMG Status Report will only show month and year that you passed these exams.

The only scores listed on the ECFMG Status Report are those for the ECFMG one-day examination, FMGEMS, VQE, PART exams, or FLEX — if you received your ECFMG Certification based on any of these older medical science exams.

If you passed Step 1 and Step 2 after being certified by ECFMG and you want the programs to know your USMLE scores, you need to request a USMLE Transcript. Go to MyERAS, Documents and click on USMLE transcript.

The Status Report will not contain any failing scores or other non-passing attempts.

The USMLE transcript contains your entire USMLE history on Step 1, Step 2 CK, Step 2 CS, and if taken Step 3. It includes all attempts: passed, failed incomplete, etc. It is not transmitted automatically. You need to request its transmission, pay $50 and assign it to your programs.

Please refer to the USMLE Bulletin of Information for complete information on what is included in the USMLE transcript.

Fifth Pathway applicants may want to list their Fifth Pathway Certificate as one of their letters. Submit a sharp copy of the Fifth Pathway Certificate to ECFMG.
For additional information and assistance, IMGs can visit the public Web site of ECFMG.

ERAS Application Process - from ECFMG website

The following is an overview of the process:

Prior to applying via ERAS, contact the programs of interest to determine their minimum eligibility criteria and application deadlines.
Request a Token, via ECFMG’s OASIS.

Register at MyERAS once you have received your Token.

Send documents with your AAMC identification number to ERAS Support Services at ECFMG. All documents should be accompanied by a completed ERAS Document Submission Form.

Track the documents received by ERAS Support Services at ECFMG on your OASIS account.

Complete, certify and submit your completed Common Application Form (CAF).
NOTE: Do NOT certify your application until you are absolutely sure it is complete. Once you certify your application, you will not be able to make any changes.
Register with NRMP in order to participate in the Match.

The ERAS PostOffice opens September 1st. Applicants may begin applying to ACGME accredited programs, and ACGME accredited programs may begin contacting the ERAS PostOffice to download application files.

A few days after applying, monitor the status of your ERAS application via the Applicant Document Tracking System (ADTS), which you can access from the MyERAS login page.
NOTE:There is a 24-hour interval before we can transmit any document, even if it has been scanned into your temporary holding bin. This 24-hour interval affects all applicants, including applicants from U.S. medical schools.
