How much time is needed for the ECFMG to verify the credentials after recieving the transcript from the medical college? My site shows that the ECFMG has recieved the verification documents on may 10th but yet shows that verification is pending.

My OASIS credential page has now changed from documents recieved date to verifications recieved date. Does that mean my credentials are now verified? Also there is a note saying that the ECFMG will idividually intimate me by post when the verification is over. why not by e-mail?

Mine has a phrase about status, yours does not. Don't worry. They are slow, but eventually everything will be all right.

does the ECFMG have to verify credentials before giving out scheduling permit?

or can we take the steps while certification is ongoing, considering that it does take a very long time.

regards,
asmd.

You can take the steps while certificatiion is going on...no problem.

thanks heaps for the prompt reply.
that is a relief to know.

I am still waiting for over a year for verification. They sent it last time in August and still haven't heard back.

perdesi:
I had the problem, that they sent a copy of the medical school diploma to the Dean of my medical school. First of all, this copy never arrived there. I called the ECFMG, the copy was resent, but also never arrived at the Dean's office (the resent the documents months later, I had to call them to do so!) Second: the diploma in Germany is not issued by the medical school, but by the 'Government District Administration' (state board exam!). The final transcript was prepared from the medical school's Dean exclusively for the ECFMG: all medical students in Germany have to take similar classes, not matter which med school they attend. Until 2004 the classes were graded on a pass/fail basis, so the grade on you diploma is calculated from the multiple exams (compared to USMLE Step 1/2/3). Thus the transcript would look very similar for every graduate (except for different dates).
So you may call the ECFMG and ask them, where they sent to documents to! If they got the address (e.g. medical school) right, you may call the recipient.
Another advice: avoid sending documents by USPS! Open up a FedEx or DHL account. You can track your documents and you can be sure that they are delivered in a timely manner.

What I learnt the hard way is: the most difficult and time consuming thing is to get the paperwork done! You can take Step 1/2 CS/CK within weeks, but getting your diploma/transcripts verified can take several months (even more than a year)
