Hope this helps others too. In the shortest possible way ,here's how to deal with with domestic violence, Ask this question to all female patients,"Do you feel safe at home?"or after asking who do you live with ask "how does he treat you?" Ok , If you suspect spousal abuse or if she opens up, How to begin, (choose depending on the situation) Eg 1 Ms ..... Iam very sorry to hear that. You have a right to be treated with respect. Eg 2 Ms ...... Iam sorry to know that you are going through all this .You dont deserve to be treated this way. Eg 3 Ms.... I understand that you are going through a difficult time, but there are several things which you could do to avoid such situations in future. Then, Say, "I would suggest you have a plan handy so you know what to do when this happens again,Ok?" "Keep some close friends or relatives informed about the situation. "Decide about a safe place to go ,a relative's or friend's home . "Pack a few things and be ready, documents and money for example" "If its an emergency call 911!" "I'll give you a few phone numbers , website addresses and other information which i think would be helpful to you."There are agencies and shelters and people who can help you " "Iam always here to answer your questions and to help you ok?" If kids are involved, tell her that if you have reasons to believe that they are being abused then you would have to involve the Child Protective Services.( this is mandatory) This may look like a long lecture ...... but practice it again and again ...even then you'll remember only a few lines in the exam! Want more details? Ask me ! And remember , you cannot tell her "Leave you husband /BF and run away". Its her decision. You only tell her what options are available.
