Hi
I have joined a research hospital volntarily which is currently conducting research in psychiatric illness eg schizophrenia,bipolar,etc.
If I apply for residency in internal medicine ,can I mention this volunteer work .Actually I am worried that if they will ask me why I worked in psychiatry while I am applying in int medicine.

Of course you should mention that...
Maybe they will ask..., why you did psych reserach?, I don´t know..., come up with the answer...

They will understand..., maybe you got a good opportunity to do psych research..., maybe you didn´t have another option at that moment, maybe u thougth it would be interesting..., I don´t know your actual reason..., just be honest an try to explain it in a way that doesn´t hurt your application and even that your are more sure than ever u want IM

Well u can Always say this that For that Moment in Time there wasnt anything Available so tried to see how psychiatry works wanted to get a research experience and to get the basics of research so ur goal was to get exposure of research rather than to see how psych option is.

u now some one told me that u can say that ,a lot of psychiatric illnesses express itself in somatoform and pain disorders.eg Stress can lead to peptic ulcer......so it was an effort to get the approach to differentiate medical illnesses from psychiatric illnesses .
I dont know is it justifies or not

I disagree with that. It looks like an excuse, like a justification for something you did and you shouldn't have done it. 
one option is: you looked for a rotation in IM but you didn't get any and on the other hand, at the same time, you came up with this opportunity in psychiatry because of a friend of yours or something so you took it just for being active in clinical practice.
other options: you can make them.
but honesty and truth are usually good.
