everyone is saying there is more molecular bio on the test now....I read the HY book and i thought it was the worst book ever. For those that have taken the test, Is there something in that book that we should pay attention to? I know the molecular tests (PCR probing etc) but do we need to HOX genes and the other minutia ? thanx

hi,,i had a hox gene question in my test, but i have the feeling it was an experimental one,,dont go crazy about it,,but i do strongly suggest you to know everything about cell division,,dna replication, all enzymes involved there..also the dna repair enzymes and its clinical significance,,etc,...Good Luck.

Why do you think the HY is not good? Today I was looking at the table of contents of it on amazon website, the table of contents seem to be sufficient, so I thought may be it is sufficient and I wanted to order it, but after your post it seems that I should change my mind. Do you think they didn't mention topics proper and understandable?

i like it....i'm reading it these days. perhaps the info. is given in a crammed up format, but overall i think it's a good concise way of covering the topic

i bought the one from 1999 and it is really just a bunch of detailed crammed into each chapter. i was a biochem major so this stuff isn't new to me but i just didn't feel the book really emphasized what is important, they just put everything. you can't remember every gene and their regulations, so i felt it was a waste of time. maybe the new one is different,....

in my opinion the HY book doesnt explain anything much but just smashes tons of info into your face. that info is useful but at the end of the day u need to understand molecular bio rather than just memorize it. i think the mol bio sections in Kaplan Biochemistry book were very good and easy to understand. even better if u can watch the dvds for mol bio (part of biochem DVD)

and dont worry about HOX SCHMOX. i think its gonna be quite some time before those become regular and non experimental questions. just for safe keeping only remember the one or two diseases associated with them e.g. PAX gene defect etc.

well it all depends on how good your concepts of mol.bio were in college and even before that. if you're concepts are solid and cemented, then high yield is perfect for the review. however, if you're picking up on the subject just now and making concepts now then this book isn't for you and you better start from the basics and find a separate book for that.

Apparently Almost Everyone Gets a HOX Gene Q in their Exm. The Question being of a Experimental nature or an actual q is actually debatable but the Imp Point is that they never go into the Subj like crazy. So its one Q Dropping it is not gonna hurt u cos there is no negative marking. If u cant understand Kaplan then u r really in big trouble cos its the most Concised and Comprehensive Material for Mol. Bio u dont need to go ahead and get urself a PhD in it. That said Althought the HY books Come with a In Ur Face kinda Presentation but the Info sometimes makes sense when combined with Kaplan cos the blanks in Kaplan r Filled up by HY. But All in All Kaplan is sufficient but if u need concepts then the Field is Wide open for many books HY being one of them

i THINK kAPLAN IS GOOD TOO or Lippin. for concepts. U make look at HY once u have better understood what its all about. It's not so bad when u know what ythey are talking about. So get that part done first. Also, I got a HOX q. in my test 4 yrs back. exp.? I think not!
