Hey there. Congrats. I hear the Jamaica program is great. Yes, I am planning on doing the USMLEs, probrably writing them after 3rd yr, depending on how my studying goes. I am hoping for a residency in the US, yes, but ofcourse, you know how that depends on USMLE scores. I know someone who scored 99 from UWI (JAMAICA), so I am hoping to be as successful. My first 2 years weren't bad. A lot of work, so be prepared. Just keep up with your work as much as you can. You don't have to study for 8 hrs a day as some ppl will have u believe. But u certainly must put in a cple to 3 hrs a day or so (in my opinion). I don't know how different the structure of the Jamaica program is from the Trinidad program though. I like the TT program so far. I am a Canadian student. So, neither U.S. nor Trini. So, we'lls ee how it goes. My plan right now, is to do my best in school, and perform VERY well on the USMLEs. However, I like the Caribbean, so I do not mind practicing here for some time. We have a residency program here at UWI TT Emergency med and not sure but maybe anaesthesiology that I'm looking into now. First year was okay, since I have a first degree and so some of the subjects were familiar to me, but still, I had to keep up with the workload. Second year now, was a lil tougher. The workload doubled all of a sudden lol. But still, we got through. Just apply yourself and ask questions when you are unsure, don't procrastinate too much ( a lil is natural for me anyway), and you will be a-okay. If you are planning to write the USMLEs, I would suggest that you buy a USMLE review book now and use it along with your basic science years for the relevant blocks. This is quite helpful. As you know, UWI is a Caribbean med school, so it does not specifically prepare you for the USMLEs. So, you must make sure that you are using the prep books to ensure that you're learning the style of teaching for the USMLEs and the topics that you are expected to know. Doing it along with your blocks makes it a lil easier, and you can ask your professors any questions that come up when you are using the USMLE prep books. I hope that all made sense. Good luck. I hope you enjoy med. Remember not to study TOO much so you don't get burned out- try to strike a good balance. And if you can, get some exercise into your daily routine. This really helps with stress and keeps you healthy. Cheers. Let me know if you have any more questions.
