The incidence of a disease in a town is 6 per year .. and te prevalance 60 per year .. Now you go to the town ... and somehow manage to decrease the mean time of the disease by FIVE years ... What will be the prevalance of the isease after 10 years.. A) 10 B) 15 C) 30 D) 50 E) 90 F) Will stay the same

hey atlast I think I found the way to solve this qn, but this qn is incomplete. we need to know the duration of the disease to solve this by using prevalance = incidence * duration. so the prevalance= 6 * the duration ( which we do not know cos its not mentioned in the qn ).

then I dont know how to do this. But looks like something is amiss. anyway...if you could recollect somemore info about this qn, let me know cos this qn looks very interesting and I am weak in stat I dont want this to come in my exam.

If you have to go by the formula P= I X D, Then the duration of the disease is 10 years. If this mean time is decreased by 5, and incidence remains constant a 6, then prevalence is decreased to 30. So what is the answer?

C? P=I*D--> 60=6D so D=10. decrease D by 5--> P=6*5 so P=30

I dont think you can take 10 as duration of the disease, they say whats the prevalence after 10 yrs, no where in the qn they say that the disease lasts this long. my thoughts..

nimer I would use the same formula but would need to know the duration of the disease and subtract 5 from it.

hey nimer .. i guess u r right answer is 30.. coz its mention that they have decrease the duration of disease to 5 yrs.. so start fro 1st yr u will have 6 new cases as per incidence.. but it will last for only 5 yrs.. same for 2nd , 3rd and up to ten yr.. but at the end of 10 yr ur 1st 5 yrs cases would be cure so there will be only 30 cases at the end of 10 yrs..

The formula P=I*D is not a mathematical formula but only gives a relation between P and I... i agree with the way paresh1225 has explained the problem rather than the mathematical solution...cannot find any other way of explaining it...
