I'm wondering if I take a prelim medicine and then decide to take categorical medicine will this year count? I mean will I take 2 more years or I would still have to take 3 years?

it would take 2 years. but prelim medicine is a competitive field and usually no H1 visas

Depends on you and your performance. And if the program that you are looking at continuing on for Categorical medicine has a second year spot available.

1. The workoad is much more in surgery so lots of AMGs perfer to go to IM perilm.

2. it is a definite requirement for some courses, like Neuro, Psychiatry.

3. Some who have chopped liver for IM, hope for PGY2.
