I will have two months observership in community hospital and 1month externship in office, couple of good US LORs, is that good enough or should I also go for observership in university program for a month,if the total cost of doing that observership is $3500 inclusive of food, board and other

I think what you have is enough. But if you do this latest thing you wil have something to show for in these last six months. If you can afford it do it otherwise just wait.

Thanks for reply, although couple of month's experience is going to be during this summer, but I was wondering if I should do observership in uni prog since I have not done ant experience in uni and they say it is best to have exp in uni. Although it is almost set up but the only thing of concern is that I will have to spend around $3500 inclusive of food, board and transport. So if it will make a gr8 difference then only will I do it.So what do u guys think.

why don't you do an observership for 1 month in the commu hosp + observership for 1 month in the univ hosp + 1 month externship??

My observership in community hospital wont cost me much and I do have the time for that. But my only concern is whether to spend $3500 for uni observership or not?

you could do other month(s) of externship instead of the observership in the univ hosp. It's another alternative. $3500 for 1 month of observership is very expensive.

But sir my only concern is that as they say uni prog observership is the best so should I spend this much hard earned money on doing that. And externship also costs me the same.

I'd spend that $ in more externship rather than the observership (no matter if it's a top univ hosp). That's what I tried to say in my last post. But that's just my opinion. . Wait for others...

Observership is observership whether in uni or community ....But for sure oservership in a top uni > in a community ....but at the same time sumthing involving more involvement than just observing > any observership .Your lor from top university observership may not be heeded at all at one program and the same letter can get you the spot in another program during a selection comittee discussion ..Your observership at uni hospital can go uneventful and at the same time during your observship at community hospital you could come across a person who can uplift you to glory ...vice versa can also happen . its a matter of making choices ..Unfotunately you have a difficult one at your hand ...YOU just be rational with yourself and think hard in daylihgt and choose what you may .Either decision is wise ..go with your gut .....Just my opinion ...Wait for others if you want to but do what your heart says .

well if i was in ur situation and considering u have only limited resources like me i will consider it a waste to spend 3500$ for observership. however if u have a chance of matching in the program then u can do that. considering ur profile and if there is improvement in interviewing skills i am sure u will match in a program next year. observership i not considered usce by most programs and dosn't carry as much weight as externship.

Dear Harry, I personally think that many of us were very surprised that you did not match in last season. You were in this forum for a while and many of us know you ( -from what you told us). You had wondeful credentials, certificate at that time, and a lot of IVs. I vaguely remember you had more than 10 IVs. Having said that, I DONT think it would be best to spent 3500 USD for 1 month observersip. You had USCE and US LORs aleardy ( 2 or 3, right?). Just work on IV skills, the way you sell yourself during IV, you dress, PS... and if you still have time, get some more onserbvership or whatever that cost you less than that. 3500 is too much as I think even in big place. A friend of mine got observership for free in Stanford. She of course lives in California. I'm not sure if it helped you with my opinions. Sincerely, I wish you will match in the coming Match. All the best, Harry.

Harry 99, I understand your concern. It really is your choice, either way would be fine, both experience would boost you CV. If money is not a issue, go for the univ. oberservaship. I personally would not do it, but again, it is your choice. I have a question, you said that you have done an office externship. Are you sure you can call it externship? Usually it is offered through residency prog. at Hospitals. I am doing similar things at a clinic, not sure what to call it on my ERAS application... Could you shed some light on this?
