BBB, first, thank you so much for nicely and pateintly answer our questions.
My question is: should I take step3 before residency application. I already passed step 1 and 2, scores are ok, but not very impressive; I have green card, no need for H1 visa.
I am in a kind of dilemma: on one hand, I want take step3, to make me standing out from other candidates, especially when my stp 1 and 2 scores are not that "sexy"; on the other hand, I am afraid if I failed in step 3, the failing score just make my application worse.
So, the questions are:
1. How much does the PD care for step3? I know it is a plus, but, how important it is?
2. In case I failed the step 3, is it possible that I hold this step3 score while just send out the step 1 and 2 scores for application or all of the three scores will be sent out automatically?

i think if you dont need visa then you can wait for your step 3. There is no need for you to give it early. AS you said if you pass with great scores it helps but if you fail then it will be a neative thing.

even if you fail your step 3 score will go unless you write it late( say in sept) after sending in the other 2 scores. you can say manual transcript.

Well the other thing is you can withhold your S3 scores( dont use automatic trasmit) Transmit it only if u think the score s " sexy " 
But yes , If u do clear it on ur 2nd attempt n then trasmit it , they ll know bout ur attempts!!

you talked about "withhold" the score; does this mean i must take the stp3 exam in or after september, so that my stp 1 and 2 scores are sent out to the programs while stp3 score is still pending, so that i can hold the score?

Concur - Step 3 isn't necessary unless you are going for an H1b visa

Above 90.
it is out of question that if you have step 3 result they will give your application more attention.

Thanks, amirhossein, my step 3 score is 87, not as good as I wanted but it is fine, hope for the best for 2008 match.

Redsky - trust me after seeing the scores that my residents received on Step 3 - that's a really good score.
