A cardiologist performed a routine work up on a 65 yo Afro-Carribean male. From the history of Mr White, you know that he has arteriosclerosis. Which of the following would you expect in him - MAP Pulse Pressure A) Inc Dec B) Dec Inc C) Inc Inc D) Dec Dec Please explain your answers because this is a VERY important concept!

In arteriosclerosis, for example, where the arteries become stiff, the pulse pressure is chronically raised

I cant not enuf history but considering he is 65 yr so he will have hardened arteries so his MAP n PP will both be increased

N-n-L, you got it! Both MAP and PP should increase in case of arteriosclerosis. Now tell us, WHY that happens.

Agree, i met lots of african americans having White as a last name in US clinical setting ! As far as the expl. goes, i dare to share my thoughts, again, just my understanding, it doesnt mean im correct atherosclerosis hardens the vessel less Compliant vessel ---> increase SBP and Decr DBP---> wider PP

Epica, the correct answer is Inc, Inc i.e. C. As Lucky already explained, PP increases in ateriosclerosis. My understanding for increased MAP is hardening causes dec in compliance --> inc P

relation between compliance and BP, fall in compliance..........rise in pulse pressure. fall in compliance..........rise in MAP... why bcos fall in compliance......rise in both systolic and diastolic pressure... just put on respective formulae Pulse pressure.....syst minus diastolic MAP....................diast plus 1/3syst. both has sys and diastolic component....when both are rising individually........resultant pressures shud also rise...

MAP=CO*TPR..in arteriosclerosis the total peripheral resistance increases ,so if one of the component increases ,the MAP shud also increase. pulse pressure=the resistance increases in the vessels,so the pressure shud also increase, so it shud be A .both increases.

both MAP and Pulse pressure increases as MAP is the sum of all pressures and de to arterioosclerosis the pressure increase in all the arterial sysytem thus increasing MAP and as the sysyto;e increases it will also increase the pulse pressure......
